Older Adult Services
For older adults, the desire to age gracefully can feel daunting. Physical illnesses, medications and the mental and social pressures of aging can make diagnosis and treatment of late-life mental health issues more complicated. Parkwood’s Older Adult Unit provides mental health; crisis management, assessments and treatment services for adults, age 50 and older.
We are here to help:
The following are symptoms which may indicate that an older adult mental health evaluation can be useful:
- memory loss
- mood disturbances
- difficulty coping with losses and transitions
- behavioral conditions that interfere with care at home or in a long-term setting
Parkwood’s newly constructed Older Adult Unit provides specialized acute care for adults 50 and older who are facing a mental health crisis. Our multidisciplinary team provides specialized treatment for older adults that may include medications management, attention to medical issues, cognitive sensory integration group therapy and recreational therapy in a safe and therapeutic environment. Patients receive comprehensive evaluations to determine an appropriate diagnosis and assess their emotional, behavioral and cognitive abilities. Once the evaluation concludes treatment planning begins with care on the unit and coordinated care with an appropriate outpatient provider upon discharge. Our staff works closely with patients’ families and referrals to support and maintain symptom improvement achieved while on the unit. Patients’ families will be provided with caregiver education and support to determine the most appropriate after-care options. Our staff also consults and coordinates care with referrals while patients are on the unit and provides concrete treatment recommendations for implementation after discharge. Our goal of treatment is to relieve symptoms and improve patient’s quality of life. For more information or a no charge assessment, contact Parkwood Behavioral Health System at 1-800-477-3422.
